Black Lounge Film Series Presents:
Monday Night Movies @ Lakou
Join us on June 16th as we celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month for the second edition of Monday Night Movies @ Lakou, the beat of Little Haiti. Under the stars and in community we will watch The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss (doors open at 6 pm; film begins at 8 pm). Together we will hold space for exploring the culture and creativity of the African Diaspora.
The Creole Pig, film by Dudley Alexis, is a poignant accounting of the life of the Creole Pig, central to Haitian life for generations. Indigenous to Haiti, the Creole Pig was critical to the Haitian economy, central to its culture, and fundamental to its day-to-day existence. However, in the 1980s, an outbreak of swine flu, prompted USAID and the Haitian government to exterminate the entire population of Creole pigs. The documentary explores how this mass culling accelerated Haiti’s economic decline while examining the political and social fallout. Featuring interviews with farmers, economists, educators, and political analysts, the film delves into Haiti’s history and politics to unpack the profound impact of this tragic event.
Monday Night Movie @ Lakou is made possible by the generosity of Lakou Miami, Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance, and FePouLi in partnership with iWitness, IPC ArtSpace, and FIU’s Public Humanities Lab.
